This is a reference, not a novel. Jump to the coordinator pick, the category you are shopping, or the channel guidance. In the PDF these are bookmarks; in the web reader they are links.

Eight rules that save you money and grief.

If you read nothing else before you start adding to cart, read this. These are the rules that separate a Zigbee network you forget about because it just works from one you’re constantly re-pairing. Every one of them is expanded later in the guide.

How I compared these

Know what the words on the cover mean before you spend money on them.

Documentation-verified. Checked against current manufacturer specifications and current ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT support information. That is the basis for most of this guide, and it is why the cover says compared and not bench-tested.
Legacy stock. Still a good buy while the exact Zigbee model is on the shelf, but no longer in current production.
Unofficial mode. A device can technically join through an undocumented or hidden mode. I do not treat that as dependable product support, and neither should you.
Category guidance. A shape of product rather than a ranked pick: you still verify the exact SKU, region, and stack support.

Pairing alone is not enough. What matters is the feature support I could verify, not the logo on the box.

Product status in this guide checked July 2026; protocol and model number matter more than the retail name.

Who this is for

You run, or are about to run: Zigbee locally through Home Assistant, on either ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. You want to know what to buy, in what order, and what to avoid, without wading through a hundred Reddit threads. You are not looking for a cloud hub that phones a vendor to turn on a light.

Not covered here: Z-Wave and Matter/Thread device selection (that’s the free blog explainer and a future volume), plus smoke, heat, and carbon-monoxide alarm rankings. Life-safety alarms need country-specific certification and they must keep working locally when Home Assistant, Zigbee, or the network is down. I will not rank them without a region-specific compliance review, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. If you do add one: treat a Home Assistant notification as a secondary alert, never the primary alarm, and confirm the device keeps its certified local detection and siren behavior when the coordinator is unavailable. This guide is Zigbee, end to end.

The eight rules.

  1. Buy the coordinator first, and buy a good one. It is the one part you cannot cheap out on. A $15 coordinator on a bad USB port is the single most common reason people think “Zigbee is unreliable.” Zigbee is fine; the radio placement was wrong. (Chapter 01.)
  2. Put the coordinator on a USB extension cable, away from the machine. USB 3.0 ports and SSDs spray 2.4 GHz noise. A $6 cable that moves the stick half a meter away fixes more range problems than any firmware update. (Chapter 01.)
  3. Most mains-powered Zigbee devices you add are routers, but verify the model. Plugs, many bulbs, and wired switches often extend the mesh; battery sensors do not. Plan for a few known-good routers before you scatter thirty battery sensors around the house. (Chapters 03, 08.)
  4. Do not build your mesh backbone out of the cheapest bulbs. Some bulbs are excellent routers; some repeat badly and drop their children; a few older ones barely route at all. A $9 smart plug is a more reliable repeater than a $4 bulb. (Chapters 05, 08.)
  5. Pick ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT before you pair fifty devices. They do not share a normal one-click import. Switching later is disruptive, and going from ZHA to Zigbee2MQTT generally means re-pairing. Choose deliberately in Chapter 02, then commit.
  6. Batteries are the running cost. Prefer devices that take common cells (CR2032, AAA) over sealed rechargeable packs. A sensor that sips a coin cell for two years beats a “smart” one you recharge every eight weeks.
  7. Standard beats clever. A boring, standards-compliant contact sensor will outlive a clever one with a custom cluster that half-works on your stack. When two devices do the same job, buy the one with the fewer surprises. (Chapter 07.)
  8. Buy for the local ecosystem, not the box art. “Works with Alexa” on the packaging tells you nothing about whether it pairs cleanly and runs locally in HA. This guide’s tier lists are built on the second question, which is the only one that matters here.
The one mistake that costs the most

Buying a big box of cheap battery sensors first, pairing them all, and then wondering why the far ones keep dropping. The fix is router density, and it is much easier to plan up front than to retrofit into a network you’ve already built. If you do the coordinator and a handful of mains-powered routers right, the sensors mostly take care of themselves.
